China Dota2 Supermajor: Preview
Supermajor details
There are only days left until the most awaited and talked about major of the 2017/2018 season! Shanghai's will be the first real challenge for the NAVI.GG.BET new lineup, which means the boys will be looking to prove their mettle and make the most out of every game. Prepare to get even more excited as we put together a preview featuring all the details you need to know!
On the eve of the event
It's worth noting that Natus Vincere were among the ten teams to get invited to the biggest major of the season. PGL and Perfect World revealed the invites back in the middle of April, even before our lineup was amended.
Unlike the TI system, majors do allow the participation of teams who went through roster shuffles. At Supermajor, we'll see the debut of Born to Win's newcomer Fedor "velheor" Rusikhin. This will be the first major as well as the first international tournament in the player's career.
There's no doubt the tournament will be a crucial test of stamina both for velheor and the rest of the players. To do well, he will have to perform on par with experienced opponents and, even more importantly, overcome nervousness which can sometimes be even more dangerous than the enemies you face in the game.
To mesh and form some synergy, the Natus Vincere boys gathered for a bootcamp in Kyiv several weeks prior to the event and, thanks to MarsMedia, carried it into China. They focused mainly on fixing communication issues and adapting to the latest patch, as well as devising new strategies to suit the new lineup.
China Dota2 Supermajor details
On June 2-10, sixteen teams from six regions will be fighting over the title of the Supermajor champions. The event has a whopping prize pool of $ 1,500,000 and 2,250 qualifying points on the line and will be decisive as to the last four teams to travel to The International 2018 in Vancouver. The venue will be the Yuanshen Gymnasium in Shangha.
As usual, the major will be organized in two stages: the group stage and the playoffs. All of the teams will make it out of the groups, with the record affecting only their seeding in the next phase. The group stage will see them split into four groups which will use the GSL format.
The top two teams of each group will proceed to the playoff's upper bracket, while the remaining teams will fall to the LB. All games will be bo3, except the bo5 grand final.
Participants
Shanghai's major will be a heavily stacked event featuring most of the world's best names. Its direct invites include Virtus.pro,
Team Liquid, and
Team Secret, who have already earned a spot on the TI 2018. Although the last two are currently ahead in the DPC ranking, VP seem to be the most formidable in the light of their triumph at Birmingham's major.
Another TI participant, LGD.PSG, made it to Shanghai through regional qualifiers. Besides them, China will be represented by
Newbee,
Vici Gaming and
VGJ.Thunder, who are rounding out DPC's top 8 and are looking to strengthen their positions. The SEA's
Mineski are coming into the tournament with the same intent.
The North American teams OpTic Gaming and
Evil Geniuses have also been invited to Supermajor. The fans can't wait to see them in action, as ppd's squad has been steadily gaining momentum lately, and EG have made roster changes and will be looking to surprise their opponents.
The qualified teams include Team Spirit,
The Final Tribe,
Infamous,
TNC Pro Team, and
VGJ.Storm. It's unsound to rule any of these out prematurely – they can deliver unbelievable plays and make mistakes, you just can't predict it.
