The International 10 will not take place in Sweden

Dota 2 / News / 22 June 2021 — 11:34

It is currently unknown where the tournament will be held.

The International 10 will not take place in Sweden. The country's government refused to allow Valve to host the championship.

As stated in the official announcement, Stockholm Live and Visit Stockholm continued to reassure Valve that The International 10 qualified for the same exemptions other elite sporting events. However, two weeks ago the Swedish Sports Federation had voted not to accept esports into the sports federation.

After meeting with the Swedish Esports Federation, Valve discovered that the only remaining option was to ask Sweden's Minister of the Interior to reclassify The International 10 as an elite sporting event. Unfortunately, the request was immediately denied. For this reason, anyone attempting to procure a visa for travel into Sweden for TI10 (including players, talent, and staff) would be denied.

On 9 June Valve filed an appeal with the Swedish government, but received no assistance. On June 14 Valve followed up asking them to reconsider, and they have so far been unable to offer a resolution. As a result, and in light of the current political situation in Sweden, Valve has started looking for possible alternatives elsewhere in Europe to host the event this year, in case the Swedish government is unable to accommodate The International 10 as planned.

The Dota 2 developers are confident that The International 10 will take place this year, in a way that is both safe for all involved, and properly celebrates the players and fans. In the meantime, TI qualifiers will still be happening on the originally scheduled dates. Valve has also promised that later this week, the all-new summer event Nemestice will arrive.
